Meet
Mr. Rocco!
Mr.
Rocco! I'm looking for a BFF !
Uh-Oh...
I think I see my future...
YEP!! Let's go rocking with Rocco!!
Rocco’s
big friendly spirit nearly cost him his life. He came to a shelter
as a stray and immediately won over several attendants with his
friendly ways. Too friendly, nearly. Encouraged by their enthusiasm
for him and limited knowledge of getting to know a strange dog
in a scary place, they played and hugged. During one of those
hugs they apparently either squeezed a huge lump on his side or
touched his snout which was hiding a painfully fractured tooth.
He yelped and bit the attendant on the arm before running away.
So, he was quarantined. Because of his age and appearance, and
it being a shelter he was to end his days moments after the end
of that quarantine.
Even
the sergeant-in-charge thought Rocco was getting a raw deal, that
his staffer had overdone it, but rules were rules. A DRNV volunteer
picked him up just hours out of incarceration and staffers were
very grateful to see him get a chance. The next big question was
those big lumps and what they might portend. Surgery removed two
lumps, one nearly baseball-sized, and they were confirmed as benign.
Careful examination showed a healthy and “clean” abdomen
and chest. No cancer! His heart is strong, steady and regular.
And even happier news is that when the tooth was removed so, too
was the pain. He is now free to be the handsome, friendly and
playful senior all good Dobies deserve to be. But, he’s
still old.
