Miss
Ruthie in her Bailey's Chair!
Slow
starvation by megaesophagus...
Ruthie is an eight year-old dober lady who came
to Dobie Rescue of North Florida from a shelter on Florida's east
coast. She was turned in my her owner's roommate after he was
incarcerated. Ruthie stayed at the shelter approximately two months
unable to eat her food efficiently due to an undiagnosed case
of megaesophagus and was only 38 pounds when rescued. If left
untreated this condition causes slow starvation, pneumonia, and
death.
Ruthie needed to be kept in the upright position
in order swallow her food properly and the angels at the rescue
soon found what they needed on the internet. Materials were purchased
to build Ruthie a "Bailey's Chair" made from 1"
x 4" white pine lumber with lots of foam rubber used for
cushioning. Gravity helps move the food down her esophagus to
her stomach while the chair keeps her upright. She soon began
to gain weight and blossomed into the sweet Senior girl she is
today.
She is now starting to play with the other foster
dogs she lives with and loves to run and bark at the chickens
and peafowl safely kept penned away from the dogs. Ruthie is a
wonderful dog who would make someone a great companion. She is
sweet and will make you adore her.
Special Needs if any: Her feedings are the only
special care Ruthie needs and she is quite comfortable in her
chair for the 30 minutes she needs to sit upright after feedings.
Geographic areas: Florida and the surrounding states
where a home visit can be arranged.
